Chiefs fall to Red Wings, split series

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 5-3 on Sunday. Chiefs starting pitcher Ryan Tatusko gave up just two runs, but the Syracuse bats were held to zero runs in the first eight innings.

Rochester (53-50) started the scoring early in the first inning. After an Antoan Richardson walk, Eric Farris laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Richardson to third base. Then, with Deibinson Romero at the plate, Tatusko hurled a wild pitch, allowing Richardson to score for the game's first run.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Red Wings plated another run. With one out, Oswaldo Arcia launched a home run over the right-field wall, extending Rochester's lead to 2-0. The long ball was Arcia's second in as many days.

The Red Wings extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Following a one-out single from Drew Butera, Richardson singled to left field. Chiefs manager Tony Beasley then took the ball from Cole Kimball and handed it to Xavier Cedeno. Cedeno's first batter, Eric Farris, belted a ground-rule double over the left-field fence, plating both Butera and Richardson to make the score 4-0 Rochester.

Rochester added its final run in the top of the eighth inning. Jermaine Mitchell led off the inning by beating out a ground ball to shortstop for an infield single. With Fryer at the plate, Mitchell then stole second base. Fryer would hit a ground ball to third and reach on a Will Rhymes throwing error. With runners on the corners, Ray Olmedo hit into a fielder's choice at second base, scoring Mitchell to lengthen the Red Wings lead to 5-0.

Syracuse (43-57) finally got on the board with a ninth-inning rally. After a leadoff walk by Tyler Moore, Chris Marrero singled into center field. Following a Corey Brown strikeout, Zach Walters nailed a one-out pitch from Michael Tonkin over the right-field wall to cut the Rochester lead to 5-3. The game came to an end, though, after two consecutive groundouts.

Syracuse will begin a four-game series with the Louisville Bats on Monday. The Chiefs send left-hander Danny Rosenbaum to the hill to face the Bats left-hander Ryan Dennick at 7:00.
