The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Columbus Clippers for the second day in a row, 8-3, on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs are now under .500 for the first time in two weeks.

Columbus (22-20) got the offense going early. With one out in the first inning, Elliot Johnson singled to left field. Giovanny Urshela then singled to right field, moving Johnson to third base. David Cooper reached base on a fielder's choice where Chiefs starting pitcher Aaron Laffey made an errant throw to home plate while trying to prevent Johnson from scoring. The error allowed Johnson to score for a 1-0 Columbus lead.

The Clippers added to their lead during the next inning. Carlos Moncrief and Ryan Rohlinger started off the top of the second with singles to put runners on first and second. After a Justin Sellers fly out, Luke Carlin reached first base on a fielder's choice as Moncrief reached third base and Rohlinger was out at second. Tim Fedroff then walked to load the bases. Johnson, the next batter, singled to score Moncrief for a 2-0 Columbus lead. Then, with Carlin on third and Fedroff on second, Urshela singled to score Carlin, and Fedroff scored during the play after a Brandon Laird throwing error as the Clippers lead extended to 4-0.

Syracuse (21-22) responded in the bottom half of the third inning with three runs. With two outs in the inning, Laird reached base on an infield single. Laird then scored on a Sean Nicol double to cut the Clippers lead to 4-1. Will Rhymes cut the deficit to one after a two-run home run over the right field fence.

Columbus extended its lead once again in the third and fifth innings. In the third inning, with one out, Moncrief doubled to right field. He then scored on a Rohlinger single for a 5-3 Clippers lead.

In the fifth, Cooper and Carson both walked to lead off the inning and put runners on first and second. Moncrief laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Cooper to third base and Carson to second. With two outs, both Cooper and Carson scored on a Sellers double for a 7-3 Columbus lead.

The Clippers added another insurance run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Moncrief hit a solo home run to right-center field to extend the Columbus lead to 8-3.

Game three of the four-game series between Syracuse and Columbus will be played on Monday. First pitch is set for 7:00.
