Hood, Chiefs walk off against Bisons, 4-3

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, walked off against the Buffalo Bisons, 4-3, on Sunday night from NBT Bank Stadium. Destin Hood led the bottom of the ninth inning off with a walk-off home run over the left-field fence to give the Chiefs the win.

Syracuse (81-61) got on the board in the second inning off left-hander Raul Valdes. Tyler Moore led off with a double, and advanced to second on a Brandon Laird ground out. After Hood popped out, Greg Dobbs hit a ground-rule double down the right-field line to score Moore for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Jhonatan Solano followed with a double to center field to score Dobbs, and Syracuse took a 2-0 advantage.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning against Valdes. With one out in the inning, Laird singled to center field. Hood followed with a double to deep left field to put runners on second and third for Dobbs. The first baseman walked to load the bases for Solano, who singled to left field to score Laird and increase the Chiefs lead to 3-0.

Buffalo (76-65) broke up Espino's no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning. Center fielder Dalton Pompey singled up the middle to lead off the inning. After an Anthony Gose pop out, Cole Gillespie walked to put runners on first and second for Brett Wallace. Wallace doubled off the wall in left field to score Pompey to cut the Syracuse lead to 3-1.

The Bisons tacked on another run in the top of the eighth against right-hander Ryan Mattheus. With one out in the inning, A.J. Jimenez reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Jose Lozada. After a Ryan Schimpf strikeout, Pompey doubled to right field to score Jimenez and cut the Chiefs lead to one.

Buffalo tied the game in the ninth off Chiefs reliever Manny Delcarmen. Gillespie singled to right field to lead off the inning. Wallace followed with a single to center field to put runners on first and second for Dan Johnson. Delcarmen got Johnson to ground into a double play in which Wallace was out at second base, Johnson was out at first, and Gillespie advanced to third. Gillespie scored the game-tying run on a Matt Hague base hit to left field to tie the game at three.

The Chiefs ended the game in the bottom of the ninth inning against left-hander Colt Hynes. Hood crushed the first pitch he saw from Hynes over the wall in left field to give Syracuse the 4-3 win.

The Chiefs wrap up the regular season on Monday against the Bisons at 2 p.m. Syracuse's starting pitcher is still to be determined while Buffalo is scheduled to send right-hander Scott Copeland to the mound.
