Indianapolis, IN (August 12, 2017) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the third game of a four-game series to the Indianapolis Indians, 8-2, Saturday night at Victory Field. The Indians scored four runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the eighth to stretch out what was a 1-0 game.
Indianapolis (66-53) tallying a first inning run from Jordan Luplow. Luplow hit his seventh home run with the Indians over the right-field fence off John Simms for a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth inning. Simms walked Max Moroff to start the inning, and then Luplow singled. Danny Ortiz followed with an RBI single to right to score Moroff and give Indianapolis a 2-0 lead. Elias Diaz then doubled to left-center field to score Luplow and Ortiz and extend the lead to 4-0. After Kevin Jepsen came into the game and recorded a groundout, he hit Christopher Bostick with a pitch. The next batter, Gift Ngoepe, brought in Diaz with a single to center to make the score 5-0.
Syracuse (45-75) got on the scoreboard in the eighth. After Steven Brault shut out the Chiefs on just two hits in seven innings, pinch hitter Bengie Gonzalez singled to right off new pitcher Montana DuRapau. Two batters later, Irving Falu doubled down the right-field line to plate Gonzalez and cut the lead to four.
But the Indians pulled away in the bottom of the eighth off Rafael Martin. Diaz singled, and Edwin Espinal doubled to deep left-center to get the run back at 6-1. Bostick followed with a single and after a strikeout, pinch hitter Erich Weiss doubled home two runs for an 8-1 Indianapolis lead.
The Chiefs added a run in the ninth. Chad Huffman doubled with two outs to score Michael Almanzar to make the score 8-2.
Syracuse will try to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. RHP Erick Fedde is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite RHP Clay Holmes for the Indians.
