Moore, Chiefs clip IronPigs on Sunday

Chiefs score go-ahead run in the eighth
July 14, 2013

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, edged out a win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday, 2-1. Tyler Moore tallied the go-ahead RBI on a double in the eighth inning.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. In that frame, Lehigh Valley (50-48) led off with a Freddy Galvis double to left field. He moved to third when Cody Overbeck grounded to shortstop Danny Espinosa for the second out of the inning. The next batter, Leandro Castro, singled to center field to score the first run of the game.

However, Syracuse (41-55) came right back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eury Perez started the frame with a double down the left-field line. A couple of batters later and with two outs, Moore hit a double to right field that scored Perez and tied the game at one.

Both starters posted strong outings. Chiefs pitcher Danny Rosebaum gave up one run in six innings and struck out a season-high eight batters, while IrongPigs hurler Greg Smith went five-and-two-thirds innings and allowed one run on five hits.

Syracuse broke the tie in the eighth inning. With one out, Chris Rahl hit a triple to the corner in right field. After a strikeout, Moore tacked a double to left field that scored Rahl to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.

Mike Crotta pitched a scoreless ninth inning to nail down the victory.

Next up for Syracuse is the All-Star break. The Chiefs pick up the rest of their season on Thursday in Rochester at 7:05.
