Lawrenceville, GA (June 10, 2018) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the series finale to the Gwinnett Stripers, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field in Gwinnett County, GA. The Stripers scored five runs in the first two innings en route to the win, though only two of those five runs were earned, taking two of the three games against the Chiefs in the series.
Gwinnett (26-34) scored an unearned run in the first inning. Danny Santana and Dustin Peterson each singled to start the inning against César Vargas. Vargas then attempted a pick off throw at second, but his throw bounced into center field to allow the runners to move up on the throwing error. Rio Ruiz followed with a sacrifice fly to left to give the Stripers a 1-0 lead.
The Stripers broke the game open in the second inning. Xavier Avery and Chris Stewart each walked, and then Tyler Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no-one out. Lucas Sims helped his own cause with a single up the middle to score Avery and make the score to 2-0. Santana then hit into a double play, but Stewart scored to extend the lead to three. Dustin Peterson followed with a two-out ground ball to third, but Chris Dominguez's throw pulled Matt Hague off the bag, allowing Smith to score from third on the throwing error. Ruiz capped the inning with a triple to the right-field corner to push the Stripers lead to 5-0.
Santana added a sixth run in the fourth inning on his eighth home run of the season over the right-center field fence.
Syracuse (28-32) scored its lone run against Lucas Simms in the seventh. Jacob Wilson and Hague each singled and Yadiel Hernandez walked to load the bases. Gwinnett turned to David Peterson out of the bullpen, and Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Wilson and make the score 6-1.
The Stripers would gain their six-run lead back in the bottom of the eighth against Austin Adams. Carlos Franco and Phil Gosselin each singled to start the inning, and both moved up a base on a groundout. Franco then scored on Stewart's groundout to first to post the final margin of 7-1.
The Chiefs return to NBT Bank Stadium Monday to open a seven-game homestand, starting with a three-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox. RHP Austin Voth is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite RHP William Cuevas for Pawtucket. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Monday night.
