Stevenson homers, but Chiefs fall to Pigs in rain-shorted affair

Syracuse, NY (July 5, 2018) - The Syracuse Chiefs split their four-game home-and-home series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a 5-2 loss to Lehigh Valley on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium in a rain-shortened game. Andrew Stevenson homered in the game for his second home run in four games. The game was called after a 55-minute rain delay four pitches into the top of the eighth inning.

Lehigh Valley (49-36) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. Ryan Goins singled and Collin Cowgill reached on an error, placing runners on first and second base. Mitch Walding followed with a singled to center field, scoring Goins for a 1-0 IronPigs lead. Joey Meneses then singled up the middle, scoring Cowgill from second to give Lehigh Valley a 2-0 edge.
The IronPigs added a run in the top of the third. With one out, Walding singled. Two batters later, Trevor Plouffe doubled to the right-field wall, scoring Walding to extend the Lehigh Valley advantage to 3-0.

Syracuse (36-49) got on the board in the bottom of the third. With one out, Andrew Stevenson launched a ball over the right-field fence for a solo home run that trimmed the deficit to two, 3-1.

The Chiefs scored again in the fourth. Matt Reynolds led off with a double, moved to third base on a Yadiel Hernandez groundout to second, and scored on a Chris Dominguez groundout to third, cutting the IronPigs lead to one, 3-2.

Lehigh Valley used two home runs in the fifth to push the game out of reach. Collin Cowgill led off with a homer to left field to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Three batters later, Plouffe homered to left-center field, pushing the IronPigs advantage to three, 5-2.


Syracuse begins a three-game series in Buffalo against the Bisons on Friday. RHP Austin Voth is scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs opposite of RHP Sean Reid-Foley for the Bisons. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
