Niese Goes Six Shutout, Tacoma falls to El Paso on Saturday

Tacoma, WA - Left-hander Jon Niese shoved six scoreless innings and allowed only one hit in his best outing of the season, but the Tacoma Rainiers fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas on Saturday at Cheney Stadium, 6-1.
Niese walked three batters but kept El Paso (46-28) out of the hit column until a two-out single in the sixth inning broke up the no-hit effort. The 32-year-old recorded the final out of the frame and was pulled after 72 pitches with a one-run lead.
With the scoreboard at zeros, outfielder Jake Fraley scored Tacoma's (35-40) only run of the game on a wild pitch from El Paso starter Dinelson Lamet in the bottom of the second, giving the Rainiers a 1-0 advantage. Fraley went 1-for-3 and roped his first triple since being promoted from Double-A Arkansas on Friday.

Right-hander Darin Gillies (0-1) took over the mound in the seventh and gave up three runs across 1 2/3 innings before handing the ball to Tayler Scott. The South-African pitcher surrendered three runs in the final 1 1/3 frames of the game.
Four Rainiers collected hits in the contest that included Fraley, Tim Lopes, Chris Mariscal and Ian Miller. Kristopher Negrón stole his 10th base of the season, giving Tacoma its league-leading 86th of the campaign.
The Rainiers will attempt to bounce back in game three against El Paso on Sunday at Cheney Stadium. First pitch is at 1:35 p.m. PDT as Tacoma rolls out right-hander Mike Wright (0-1, 2.66) for Salute to Armed Forces Day.
