Shutout/Walk-Off Help T-Yanks Sweep Double-Header Over Threshers

August 28, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (28-34) clinched a series win over the Clearwater Threshers (31-32) by sweeping a double-header on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The T-Yanks pitching staff combined to toss 16 shutout innings in a pair of 2-0 wins, with a walk-off home run by Peter O'Brien capping off game two.

The Yankees called up RHP Rony Bautista from the Gulf Coast League to make the start in game one.

Cody Grice and Tyson Blaser singled to begin the bottom of the second for Tampa. A groundout by Jose Toussen advanced the runners before Ali Castillo drove in Blaser with an RBI groundout to second.

Tampa took a 2-0 lead with a similar outcome in the fourth. With one out, Grice singled and advanced to third on a single to right by Blaser. Grice then scored on a groundout by Toussen.

Bautista (1-0) recorded the win after pitching five shutout innings. The left-hander scattered five hits and a walk while striking out three.

RHP Taylor Garrison got the save after allowing two hits and striking out one in two scoreless innings of relief.

Threshers' starter Ethan Stewart took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. The southpaw struck out four in the complete game effort.

Runs were scarce in game two of the double-header, which required extra innings.

Branden Pinder got the start for Tampa. The right-hander pitched four and a third scoreless innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out five.

The Threshers called upon Alejandro Arteaga from the GCL Phillies to make the start. The righty scattered two hits and two walks while striking out four over six scoreless frames.

Edixon Mejia and Ben Paullus combined to toss three and two-third scoreless innings of relief for the Yankees, scattering five hits. Alex Smith (2-2) worked around a leadoff double by Brock Stassi and stranded two runners in a scoreless ninth.

Cito Culver singled off of Threshers' reliever Colton Murray (5-7) to leadoff the bottom of the ninth. Castillo attempted a sacrifice bunt and popped out to the catcher Logan Moore. With Robert Refsnyder at the plate, Moore caught Cuvler trying to steal second. Refsnyder then reached on an infield single, allowing O'Brien to bat. The 2012 2nd round pick then sent an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for a two-run walk-off home run. It was O'Brien's 10th homer run of the season for Tampa.

Up next, the Yankees host the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 12:00 p.m. in game one of a six game series. Thirsty Thursday is sponsored by NBC Sports Talks 1040 and offers $1 soda and half price draft and bottled beer from 11:00am - 1:00pm. RHP Rafael De Paula is scheduled to make the start for Tampa.
