TAMPA, Fla. - Erik Swanson tossed five shutout innings and the bullpen finished the job as the Tampa Yankees (15-18) defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays (17-16) with a series clinching, 2-0 victory on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Yankees tallied double-digit hits for the second-straight night, outhitting the Blue Jays 10-2. Tampa pitchers collected 13 strikeouts and earned their third shutout win of the season.
A pair of two-out hits put the T-Yanks on the board in the third against RHP Jordan Romano. Tito Polo lined a base hit into left and promptly stole second. Chris Gittens followed with an RBI ground-rule double down the right field line.
Swanson (W, 1-0) notched his first win with Tampa after dealing five shutout frames. The right-hander scattered two hits and two walks while striking out six Blue Jays. Swanson threw 54 of 84 pitches for strikes and extended his scoreless streak to 16.0 consecutive innings.
Romano (L, 2-1) tossed a season-high seven innings for Dunedin. The righty allowed one earned run on eight hits and a pair of hit-batters, walking two while striking out seven and throwing 61 of 94 pitches for strikes.
Tampa added an insurance run off an erratic LHP Daniel Young in the eighth. Nick Solak doubled off the glove of second baseman Cavan Biggio and advanced on an infield single by Jeff Hendrix. Young then hit Jhalan Jackson with a pitch, loading the bases. A wild pitch allowed Solak to cross the plate before Young limited the damage.
RHP Jose Mesa Jr. followed Swanson with a pair of shutout innings, striking out three and walking one while extending his scoreless innings streak to nine and a third innings. RHP Matt Marsh struck out the side in the eighth and RHP Dillon McNamara (SV, 4) worked around a walk in the ninth, closing out the shutout.
Polo (2-for-3, HBP, R, 2SB) has five stolen bases in his last two games. Gittens (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) tallied his 12th RBI and extended his hitting streak to seven games. Holder (2-fo-4, 3B) and Hendrix (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games.
The Yankees will go for the sweep of the Blue Jays in the series finale on Wednesday morning at 10:30. LHP Josh Rogers (2-2, 2.53 ERA) is set to pitch for Tampa against Dunedin LHP Angel Perdomo (2-2, 3.94 ERA). For tickets, call (813) 673-3055 or vist www.tybaseball.com.
