T-Yanks Shutout by Threshers in Series Opener

May 2, 2013

Tampa, Fla. - Former T-Yanks infielder Jose Mojica collected four hits while helping the Clearwater Threshers (12-14) defeat the Tampa Yankees (11-15) 8-0 on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

RHP Corey Black (1-3) found trouble in the fifth inning. Mojica reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning. Kyrell Hudson followed with a walk. Carlos Alonso reached on a fielder's choice after bunting towards third. With the bases loaded, Aaron Altherr then doubled down the right field line to drive in Mojica and Hudson. After Black intentionally walked Maikel Franco to reload the bases, Cameron Perkins drove in Alonso after being hit by a pitch. That gave Clearwater a 3-0 lead.

Black allowed three runs on four hits in five innings pitched. He had a season-high 11 strikeouts in the loss.

RHP Dan Manoney relieved Black in the sixth. Mojica led off with a single. After striking out Hudson, Alonso drew a walk. The runners moved to second and third after a wild pitch. Altherr then drove in Mojica with a sacrifice fly. Kelly Dugan followed with an RBI single to drive in Alonso. After a walk by Franco, Chris Serritella drove in Dugan with an RBI single to give the Threshers a 6-0 lead.

Clearwater starter LHP Hoby Milner (3-2) pitched six shutout innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out eight.

The Threshers added two runs in the eighth. With first and second and two outs, Logan Moore singled to drive in Franco. After Tampa brought in RHP Matt Daley, Mojica singled to drive in Perkins to give Clearwater an 8-0 lead.

The series continues on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida. RHP Shane Greene is scheduled to start for Tampa. The Threshers will counter with RHP Perci Garner.

Rob Refsnyder's 12-game hit streak came to an end.
