TAMPA, Fla. -- In one of the oddest ways to end a baseball game, Dom Thompson-Williams reached on a walk-off RBI catcher's interference to give the Tampa Tarpons (24-19) a 3-2 win in 10 innings over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (20-23) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
After a 39-minute rain delay, Nick Green took the mound for his eighth start of the season. The right-hander retired the first five batters he faced before three-straight Charlotte batters reached with two outs in the second. A fly out by David Olmedo-Barrera stranded the bases loaded.
Green retired six more batters in a row before the Stone Crabs broke through in the fourth. Kevin Padlo drew a two-out walk and scored on a double to the wall in center by Tristan Gray. It was the second of a career-best four hits on the night for Gray.
Brock Burke started for the Stone Crabs and retired 10 of the first 12 batters he faced before a one-out single by Alexander Palma in the fourth. A walk by Thompson-Williams pushed Palma to second and, one out later, Brandon Wagner tied the game with an RBI single into center.
The game remained tied at 1-1 into the 10th. RHP David Sosebee returned to the mound after pitching a scoreless ninth. Olmedo-Barrera began the inning at second and scored on a one-out single by Brendan McKay. Sosebee got a fielder's choice grounder from Peter Maris and a lineout to right by Nathaniel Lowe to end the frame.
Angel Aguilar started the bottom of the 10th at second base, with Tampa trailing, 2-1. Hoy Jun Park drew a walk and Isiah Gilliam flared a single into left, loading the bases with no outs. Palma tied the game with a single to right. Thompson-Williams fouled an 0-2 pitch, but forced in a run by reaching on catcher's interference.
It was the second time in the game that Thompson-Williams' bat clipped the mitt of Charlotte catcher Zacrey Law, resulting in a free pass to first base.
Green took a no-decision despite logging his fifth quality start. The 23-year-old held Charlotte to one run on two hits and a hit-batter in six innings, walking three while striking out five and throwing 55 of 96 pitches for strikes.
Burke also made a quality start, yielding one run on four hits and a hit-batter in six and a third innings for the Stone Crabs. The southpaw walked two, struck out six and threw 59 of 96 pitches for strikes.
Thompson-Williams (0-for-2, BB, RBI, 2 C.I.'s) reached base three times. Palma (3-for-5, RBI) and Keith Skinner (2-for-4) logged multi-hit games. Park (1-for-3, 2BB, R) is third in the league with 25 walks.
LHP Phillip Diehl maintained the 1-1 tie with a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, stranding a pair of singles and a walk while striking out three. Sosebee (W, 2-2) allowed an unearned run on two hits while striking out a pair in two innings.
The series wraps up on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Will Carter (0-0, -.--) is slated to make his first start back with Tampa. RHP Brandon Lawson (1-4, 5.36) is scheduled to start for Charlotte. Live play-by-play audio will be available on the Tarpons Radio Network.
