TAMPA, Fla. - Steven Sensley capped a two-out, two-run rally with a game-winning RBI double in the eighth as the Tarpons came from behind to defeat the Fire Frogs, 2-1, in the rubber game to win the series on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
RHP Miguel Yajure retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before yielding a leadoff single by Riley Delgado in the fourth. Delgado later advanced to second on a throwing error by second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera and scored on a two-out single by Jefry Ramos.
Yajure faced the minimum for the rest of his season-high seven and one-third innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven on 99 pitches (65 strikes), lowering his ERA to 2.21.
LHP Philip Pfeifer tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts while scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings before returning for the eighth for the Fire Frogs.
After a pair of groundouts started the frame, Jose Martinez reached on a fielding error by Kevin Josephina at third base and was pinch-ran for by Diego Castillo . On the next pitch, Estevan Florial hooked a double into right, placing runners at second and third.
The next pitch was thrown to the backstop by Pfeifer, allowing Castillo to score the tying run, and Florial to take third. Sensley then pulled a double to the wall in right, plating Florial for a 2-1 lead.
Despite a quality start, Pfeifer (L, 1-6) shouldered the loss, yielding a pair of unearned runs on five hits and one walk in a career-long seven and two-third innings, throwing 75 of 102 pitches for strikes.
RHP Matt Wivinis (W, 2-1) stranded a pair of inherited runners in the eighth and followed with a perfect ninth, striking out one while retiring all five batters he faced to earn the win.
Sensley (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) tallied his 19th RBI of the season. Omar Carrizales (2-for-3) and Cabrera (1-for-3, BB) reached base twice apiece.
Up next, the Tarpons return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark for a three-game series against the Daytona Tortugas. RHP Trevor Stephan (0-1, 12.00) is expected to start against RHP Austin Orewiler (4-6, 3.41) in the opener on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Live play-by-play will be available on the Daytona Tortugas Baseball Network.
The Tarpons will be back home to open a four-game series against the Clearwater Threshers on Thursday for Celebrate 'Merica Night, marking the beginning of a three-day July 4th Celebration. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. first-pitch.
