DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Gleyber Torres reached twice in his first rehab game and Brandon Wagner crushed his 20th homer, but the Tampa Tarpons fell, 4-3, in the rubber game at Dunedin Stadium on Saturday Night.
The Blue Jays (21-9, 52-46) took two-of-three in the series and won the season-series, 8-7.
Tampa (14-15, 49-50) jumped ahead in the first when Torres worked a five-pitch walk and scored on a towering two-run homer by Wagner over the right field wall.
Torres later singled in the third, but struck out swinging in the fifth before flying out in the eighth. The 21-year-old played seven innings at second base before leaving the game. Torres was sidelined on July 5th by a strained right hip and hopes to return to the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
Dunedin starter Patrick Murphy (W, 8-4) held the Tarpons scoreless for his final five innings, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on four hits, one walk and one hit-batter in six frames, striking out five on 77 pitches (50 strikes).
The Tarpons pulled off a pair of 6-4-3 double plays to help LHP Dalton Lehnen face the minimum through the third. After stranding a one-out single in the fourth, Lehnen found trouble in the fifth.
Ivan Castillo and Kacy Clemens both singled and advanced on a wild pitch before a walk by Nash Knight loaded the bases with no outs. Brock Lundquist then reached on a hit-by-pitch, forcing home Castillo.
Clemens scored the tying run when Yeltsin Gudino reached on a fielder's choice. After a lineout by Joshua Palacios, Rodrigo Orozco lined a go-ahead, two-out RBI single to left, scoring Knight to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead. Orozco would go 4-for-4 in his second four-hit game of the season.
Lehnen (L, 0-2) allowed three earned runs on five hits, two walks and one hit-batter in five innings, striking out three while throwing 46 of 78 pitches for strikes.
Dunedin added the eventual decisive run off LHP Justin Kamplain in the sixth. Riley Adams drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third before scoring on a two-out single by Knight.
RHP Jonathan Cheshire (H, 3) retired six of the seven batters he faced, tossing two scoreless innings in relief of Murphy. LHP Jake Fishman entered in the ninth and Tampa brought the tying run to the plate.
Dom Thompson-Williams lined a leadoff single into right and, after taking second on defensive indifference, tagged to third on a flying by Diego Castillo before scoring on a groundout by Angel Aguilar . Fishman (SV, 6) got Rashad Crawford to ground out to end the game.
RHP Andrew Schwaab retired five-of-six batters faced in relief of Kamplain, striking out one in an inning and two-thirds.
Ryan Lidge (2-for-3) logged the lone multi-hit game for Tampa. Wagner (1-for-4, HR, 2RBI, R) leads all Yankees minor leaguers with 20HR and 57RBI. Castillo (0-for-4) and Aguilar (0-for-4, RBI) snapped six and eight-game hit streaks, respectively.
After a league-wide off day on Sunday, the Tarpons open a seven-game home stand against the Bradenton Marauders on Monday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Nick Green (6-4, 3.41) will make the start against RHP Dario Agrazal (0-0, -.--). Live play-by-play audio will be available on the Tarpons Radio Network.
