Smokies fall in series finale to Barons

Tennessee pitching struggles as Smokies fall to Birmingham

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Smokies lost 9-2 to the Birmingham Barons in the final game of the series at Smokies Stadium on Monday. Tennessee gave up three home runs to Birmingham in the loss. Birmingham jumped in front on a solo home run in the top of the second inning,

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Smokies lost 9-2 to the Birmingham Barons in the final game of the series at Smokies Stadium on Monday. Tennessee gave up three home runs to Birmingham in the loss. 
Birmingham jumped in front on a solo home run in the top of the second inning, making it 1-0 Barons. The Smokies responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Yasiel Balaguert hit a solo home run of his own. It was the seventh homer of the season for Balaguert and it tied the game 1-1. Ian Rice and P.J. Higgins both singled later in the inning to put runners on first and second. Connor Myers singled Rice home with two outs to give Tennessee a 2-1 lead. 
The Barons would tie the game courtesy of a solo home run in the fourth inning, making it 2-2. Birmingham took the lead in the sixth inning on a two-run home run that gave the Barons a 4-2 advantage. They would add to their cushion with four RBI-hits in the eighth inning, scoring a total of five runs in route to a 9-2 lead. 
Michael Rucker started on the mound for Tennessee. Rucker pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks. He also struck out five in the start. Zach Hedges relieved Rucker to start the sixth inning. Hedges threw 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks. Hedges struck out one before handing the ball to Scott Effross, who pitched 0.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Jake Stinnett threw the final 1.1 innings for the Smokies and did not allow a run. 
After getting a day off on Tuesday, the Smokies will travel to Biloxi, Mississippi to start a five-game series with the Shuckers. Tennessee will then go to Birmingham for another five-game set with the Barons.
