Smokies shutout Shuckers on UT Night

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Biloxi Shuckers 7-0 on Saturday night to tie the series up at two games apiece. The Smokies were led by another solid outing from Keegan Thompson on the mound, earning his third win in-a-row. Tennessee got on the board first, in the third inning.

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Biloxi Shuckers 7-0 on Saturday night to tie the series up at two games apiece. The Smokies were led by another solid outing from Keegan Thompson on the mound, earning his third win in-a-row. 
Tennessee got on the board first, in the third inning. Jesse Hodges led off the inning with a walk, and Zack Short followed with a walk of his own with two outs in the frame. Jeffrey Baez doubled to score Hodges and Short, giving the Smokies a 2-0 lead. Vimael Machin doubled the lead with an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Yasiel Balaguert and Eddy Martinez to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Smokies got insurance runs. With runners on first and second, Balaguert singled home a run to make it 5-0. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, P.J. Higgins was hit by a pitch to score another run. Charcer Burks capped off the scoring when he grounded into a fielders choice that scored a run. 
Thompson started on the mound for the Smokies. Thompson pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. He did not walk anyone and he struck out three batters. With the outing, Thompson's ERA moved to 2.62. 
Thompson was relieved by Allen Webster to start the seventh inning. Webster threw one inning in his Smokies debut, allowing no runs and striking out two. James Buckelew was next out of the bullpen as he pitched a scoreless inning. Scott Effross pitched a scoreless ninth to close the game out. 
Tennessee and Biloxi will meet for the final game of the series on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Duncan Robinson (6-4, 3.56 ERA) is set to start for the Smokies and Thomas Jankins (9-7, 4.63 ERA) will start for the Shuckers. Robinson is coming off a win against Jackson, where he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one run. He is holding batters to a .217 batting average in the month of August.
