The Tennessee Smokies (42-51, 9-15) took advantage of five errors from the Mobile BayBears (38-53, 11-12) en route to a 6-1 win at Smokies Stadium on Sunday night. Smokies left fielder Zach Davis booked four roundtrip tickets as he scored a team season high four runs in a game.
Mobile gifted the Smokies two early runs on a pair of throwing errors. Davis bolted from second to third on a steal but would end up scoring due to catcher Julian Leon's throw to third landing in a different zip code out in left field. Charcer Burks reached first on a walk earlier and moved to second during Leon's throwing error but continued all the way home as a result off left fielder Bo Way's throwing error to the plate. Starter RHP Luis Madero (L, 4-7) took the loss after lasting just two innings.
The BayBears responded in the next frame to cut the Smokies lead in half. Jo Adell earned a two-out walk and used his speed to round the bases when Brandon Marsh doubled to center field.
Smokies starter RHP Thomas Hatch exited the game after two hitless innings. Tennessee used their bullpen by committee with four different arms being used. LHP Luis Lugo (W, 4-0) earned the win, while RHP Bailey Clark, LHP Jordan Minch and LHP Wyatt Short all churned out quality relief appearances.
In the fourth, Davis led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Gioskar Amaya groundout. Hitting .362 in the second half of the season, Connor Myers tailed the third Smokies run with an RBI-single to right.
The fielding woes kept coming for Mobile as they finished with five total errors. Zach Davis capitalized on an error in the sixth when he made it to second after a routine throw from shortstop to first that ended up in the Smokies' dugout. The Smokies then added two runs in three pitches. Burks lined the first pitch to left scoring Davis and stretching the Smokies lead to 4-1. On a 1-0 count, Gioskar Amaya hit a ground-rule double to left plating Burks.
Burks and Davis connected for their second RBI connection of the game after Burks' groundball slipped into left field, scoring Davis finalizing a 6-1 final.
SL All-Star RHP Cory Abbott (5-6, 4.06) gets the ball for Tennessee in game four of the series on Monday night at 7:00 pm EDT from Smokies Stadium. Mobile turns to RHP Jeremy Beasley (5-5, 3.47).
