Former Threshers Coaches At Phillies Spring Training

Two Recent Clearwater Coaches Named To Staff
January 23, 2014

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced their 2014 Major League and Spring Training coaching staff. Included are two members of last season's Threshers' staff. Chris Truby and John Mizerock have been promoted from the Advanced-A Clearwater affiliate.

Truby has been named the minor-league infield coordinator for the Phillies. He spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as the manager for Clearwater. Truby played four seasons in the Majors with Houston, Montreal, Detroit and Tamba Bay from 2000 to 2003. He spent his first two seasons in the Phillies organization as manager with Williamsport (A) before moving to Lakewood (A) for 2011.

Mizerock was named in December as the assistant hitting coach on Manager Ryne Sandberg's Phillies staff. He coached in Clearwater for the last three seasons after spending 17 years in the Kansas City Royals organization. Mizerock also played professionally for 12 years, including parts of four seasons in the Majors.

Completing the Phillies' 2014 coaching staff is Larry Bowa (bench), Steve Henderson (hitting), Pete Mackanin (third base), Bob McClure (pitching), Rod Nichols (bullpen), Juan Samuel (first base) and Jesus Tiamo (bullpen catcher).

Joining the big-league staff and Truby on the field for Spring Training will be coordinators Doug Mansolino (field), Carlos Arroyo (pitching), Andy Tracy (hitting), Andy Abad (outfield/baserunning) and Ernie Whitt (catching), along with the triple-A staff of Dave Brundage (manager), Mickey Morandini (coach), Sal Rende (coach) and Ray Burris (pitching). Mike Compton (senior advisor, player development), Jorge Velandia (special assistant, player personnel) and Roly deArmas (manager, Gulf Coast Phillies) will also assist during spring workouts.

The Phillies have invited five Alumni to serve as guest instructors. The group consists of Larry Andersen, pitcher on the 1983 and 1993 National League Championship teams and currently a radio broadcaster for the club; two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay; Dave Hollins, the Phillies special assignment scout and All-Star third baseman for the 1993 NL champs; Brad Lidge, the All-Star closer for the 2008 World Champions; and Gary Matthews, former All-Star and left fielder for the 1983 NL champs and former Phillies broadcaster.
