Altoona starter J.T. Brubaker fired eight innings to lead the Curve to a 4-2 win over the Thunder in Game Two of the Eastern League Championship Series on Wednesday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
With the win, the Curve take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five as the series shifts to Altoona for the final three games of the series.
Justus Sheffield and Brubaker traded zeros until the fifth inning when Altoona broke through for three runs. Jin-De Jhang singled and moved to second a sacrifice bunt. Jordan George then singled and Jhang scored when Rashad Crawford committed an error in center field. Sheffield reached his pitch limit after 4.1 frames and Michael Suchy singled off of Taylor Widener to extend the inning for the Curve. After Elvis Escobar singled in another run to make it 2-0, the Curve worked the count to load the bases with two out. Kevin Kramer drew a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 3-0 before Widener finally got out of the inning.
The Thunder got a run back in the fifth when Jeff Hendrix reached on a fielder's choice to score Estevan Florial. Florial, making his Double-A debut, went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts on Wednesday night.
Altoona swiped a run back in the sixth when Escobar singled in Jin-De Jhang with a single back through the middle.
Cody Carroll and Colten Brewer kept the Curve scoreless in the final three innings to give the Thunder offense a chance to rally back. Jeff Hendrix led off the eighth inning with a single, moved to second on a groundout by Crawford and scored on Thairo Estrada's single to make it 4-2. The Thunder got a two-out walk from Nick Solak in the ninth inning, but, Florial struck out looking to end the game.
Brubaker finished a career-high eight innings pitched, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk, he struck out six in the victory.
Trenton pitching has issued nine walks and hit three batters with pitches in the first two games of the series, while the Curve have issued just two free passes. Thairo Estrada has driven in two of the three runs scored by the Thunder in the ELCS.
Your Thunder head to Curve, PA on Thursday night at 7pm to play Game Three of the series. RHP Will Carter will start for the Thunder, RHP Mitch Keller will go for Altoona.
