Thunder Bash Their Way To Championship Series With 9-1 Win

TRENTON, NJ --- Jeff Hendrix and Thairo Estrada combined to go 6-for-8 with four runs scored and four driven in in the top two spots of the order and Will Carter went 6.1 innings to lead the Thunder to a 9-1 victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in Game Four of the East Division Championship Series.
With the victory, the Thunder advance to the Eastern League Championship Series for the second straight season and seventh time in the last 11 seasons and will host the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) at ARM & HAMMER Park in Game One and Two on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
The Thunder offense scored in the first inning for the fourth time in as many games on Saturday night. Jeff Hendrix led off the first with a double to left-center and Thairo Estrada followed with a four-pitch walk to put men on first and second. Rehabbing New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier reached on a fielders choice and advanced on a throwing error by Binghamton 2B LJ Mazzilli. Garrett Cooper drove in a second run with groundout to take an early 2-0 lead.
Binghamton starter Mickey Jannis was knocked from the game in the third inning after walked four batters in the frame. Thairo Estrada drove in a run with a single and later scored on a passed ball. Nick Solak drove in another with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
The offense added another run in the fourth and put the game away in the sixth inning with a two-run single from Jeff Hendrix and another RBI single from Estrada to take a 9-0 lead.
Will Carter earned the win with 6.1 innings pitched allowing just one run on three hits and no walks. He threw 90 pitches and struck out five in the win. Carter retired the first 11 men he faced in the game before allowing a single to Peter Alonso, breaking a string of 26 straight batters retired by Thunder pitching. The Thunder held opponents to 13 straight hitless innings stretching back to the end of Game Two before Alonso's hit.
Thairo Estrada finished the EDCS 8-for-16 with two hit by pitches, a walk and five runs driven in. Estrada hit for the cycle in Game Two of the season.
Clint Frazier went 0-for-5 in the game and is 2-for-17 on his rehab assignment.
