Torres, Andujar, Acevedo Shine In Shutout Win

By Jon Mozes / Trenton Thunder | May 19, 2017 10:35 PM ET

Gleyber Torres hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to lead the Thunder to a 6-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in front of 6,029 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night.

Torres' blast was truly the only support that right-hander Domingo Acevedo would need in his Double-A debut. Acevedo fired 6.1 innings allowing three hits, two walks and struck out five to earn the victory.

In order for Torres to circle the bases for the fourth time this season, the Thunder got a leadoff walk from Billy Fleming and a run-scoring double from Jorge Saez. After both Abiatal Avelino and Rashad Crawford reached on infield singles, Torres stepped up with the bases loaded and smashed a 1-0 offering off the batter's eye in center field from Trey Ball to take a 5-0 lead.

The game stayed that way thanks to solid relief from Nestor Cortes and Miguel Andujar put the cherry on top of the victory with a no-doubt solo home run to left field in the eighth inning. Matt Marsh finished off the win with 1.1 innings of relief.

The shutout for the Thunder was their ninth of the season in 39 games. Jorge Saez added a three-hit game and Abiatal Avelino had two hits in the win. With his solo homer, Andujar has driven in 13 runs in the last 13 games.

Your Thunder continue their homestand on Saturday night at 7pm against the Sea Dogs. RHP Brady Lail (1-0, 1.59) will start for the Thunder, RHP Kevin McAvoy (1-2, 3.41) will go for Portland. Saturday night features post-game fireworks! Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at
