Asencio, Pridie, Shires named to IL All-Star Team

July 3, 2013

The International League announced the 2013 All-Star team today, and Tides closer Jairo Asencio and outfielder Jason Pridie have been named to the squad, along with Norfolk trainer Mark Shires.

Asencio, who leads the International League with 18 saves, has tallied a win or save in 22 of his 31 outings this season. The 30-year-old right-hander has eight consecutive scoreless outings and is just two saves shy of moving into a tie for fifth on the Tides' single season franchise list, where Cory Doyne ('07) is the all-time leader with 29 saves. Since the Tides became an O's affiliate in 2007, Asencio is the fourth Norfolk closer to make the midseason All-Star team, joining Cory Doyne (2007), Jim Miller (2009) and Mark Worrell (2011).

Pridie, has batted .307 with 10 home runs, 20 doubles and 38 RBI for Norfolk this season. The 29-year-old, who is tied for 11th in the IL with a .307 average this season, has not seen his average dip under the .300 mark since it was at .297 on May 9. He is the fourth Norfolk position player to make the squad since 2007, joining catchers J.R. House (2007) and Omir Santos (2008) and outfielder Jeff Salazar (2010).

The game will be nationally televised on MLB Network on July 17 from Reno, Nevada.
