Former TinCaps Infielder Medica to MLB

Medica Becomes 118th Fort Wayne Alum in the Majors

Fort Wayne, IN - Tommy Medica, who played in 44 games for the 2011 Fort Wayne TinCaps, made his Major League Baseball debut Wednesday, September 11, 2013, for the San Diego Padres. Medica becomes the 118th alumnus of either the Wizards or the TinCaps to reach the majors.

Medica went 1-for-4 with a home run in San Diego's 4-2 loss to Philadelphia Wednesday night. His home run came off of lefthander Cliff Lee, a former Cy Young award winner and four-time all-star. During Medica's minor-league career, he hit .359 (95-265) off of left-handed pitching.

During the 2011 season, Medica played primarily first base, but also saw time as a designated hitter, and catcher. He hit .268 with three home runs and 21 runs batted in. He was placed on the disabled list on June 3rd of that season with a separated shoulder and was transferred to the Arizona League Padres. On July 22, San Diego transferred him from the AZL Padres to the Advanced-A Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League.

This season with Double-A San Antonio, Medica hit .296 with 18 home runs and 57 runs batted in, playing in 76 games. In four minor league seasons, he is hitting .295 with 177 runs, 94 doubles, eight triples, 49 home runs, 205 RBI, and a .388 on-base percentage. Medica was selected in the 14th round of the 2010 draft by the Padres out of Santa Clara (CA) University.

Medica is the first player from the 2011 team to reach the majors. Other former Fort Wayne players to have reached the majors this season include Jedd Gyorko (Padres), Nate Freiman (A's), Erik Davis (Nationals), Jaff Decker (Padres), Simon Castro (White Sox) and Colt Hynes (Padres).
