Sunday Struggles Continue for the TinCaps

VanMeter's RBI Double Not Enough
August 17, 2014

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Sunday afternoons at home have been devilish for the TinCaps all season, and that didn't change today against the Lake County Captains. Fort Wayne lost, 4-1, finishing its Sunday afternoon slate at Parkview Field in 2014 at 0-9. Despite the result, with a crowd of 7,477, Sunday was the team's 24th sell-out crowd of the season.

Lake County (28-26, 55-69) received a tremendous starting pitching performance from Mitch Brown (6-8), who shut the TinCaps out for six innings. The right-hander allowed only two hits and two walks.

Offensively, the Captains gave Brown an early lead to work with. Mike Papi doubled in a run in the top of the first against Ronald Herrera (6-8). Richard Stock stroked an RBI single in the fourth and Nellie Rodriguz drove in a run with a double in the fifth to make it 3-0. Later in the seventh, Indians prospect Clint Frazier belted his 12th home run of the season to expand the visitors' lead to 4-0.

Fort Wayne (24-31, 54-70) put two runners on base in the first inning, but wouldn't threaten again until the eighth. In that frame, the TinCaps had the bases loaded with no outs and the heart of the batting order up, but failed to score a run.

Finally, in the ninth, Josh VanMeter came through with a run-scoring double. Fort Wayne had the tying run at the plate with one out. However, Trevor Frank came in for Lake County and locked down his 15th save of the season.

The TinCaps stay at home on Monday to open a three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons. The 7:05 p.m. game features Jimmi Brasoban on the mound for Fort Wayne against left-hander Luis De Paula. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81 throughout Indiana.
