TinCaps Beat Beloit, Win Series

Zionsville and Purdue's Charles Drives in Two
July 15, 2013

Beloit, WI -- The TinCaps beat the Beloit Snappers, 5-3, Monday afternoon as they overcame 90-degree heat as well as four errors to win for the second day in a row. Purdue University and Zionsville High School alum Eric Charles helped lead Fort Wayne with a pair of RBI singles.

A day after shutting out the Snappers, the TinCaps were no-hit for four innings by Dakota Bacus and trailed 2-0. Meanwhile, Beloit (16-8, 59-35) scored twice against Walker Weickel (3-4) in the home third thanks to a two-run single by Chris Bostick with the bases loaded.

Fort Wayne (9-15, 52-41) took its first lead of the day in the fifth. Corey Adamson walked to lead off and Luis Domoromo provided the visitors with their first hit of the game. After Rodney Daal sacrificed the runners to second and third base, Brian Adams lined a single to center field. Adamson scored easily from third and Domoromo scored as well thanks to a throwing error by the center fielder Brett Vertigan. Adams, who reached second base on Vertigan's throw home, then stole third and scored on a single in front of the plate by Charles. Both the hit and the RBI were firsts for the 24-year old Charles in the Midwest League, and they gave the TinCaps a 3-2 lead.

The Snappers tied the game, 3-3, against Weickel in the sixth. Ryan Matthews led off with a double. Following a groundout that moved him to third, Matthews came in on a Nick Rickles sacrifice fly.

The TinCaps recorded the winning run in the top of the seventh against reliever Nolan Sanburn (0-1), as Domoromo walked, moved to second on another sacrifice by Daal, and stole third. With two outs, Charles came through again with a line-drive single the opposite way to right field that plated Domoromo. Fort Wayne added an insurance run in the eighth. Diego Goris hit an infield single with two outs to start a rally. Adamson extended his hitting streak to nine games with a base knock to right that was first bobbled by the right fielder Aaron Shipman and then thrown away by the first baseman, and cut-off man, John Wotten. The two errors enabled Goris to score from first on the single to right to make it 5-3.

After Weickel went six innings, Colin Rea kept the Snappers scoreless in the seventh. Chris Nunn then worked a perfet eighth and Roman Madrid closed the game with a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save of the year.

The victory gave Fort Wayne a 2-1 series win over the West Division leaders and a 3-3 road trip to the state of Wisconsin.

The TinCaps are off Tuesday before hosting the Quad Cities River Bandits at Parkview Field on Wednesday at 7:05. Zach Eflin takes the ball for Fort Wayne against Quad Cities' Lance McCullers in a matchup of right-handers.
