TinCaps Lose, 9-2, Drop Third Straight

Offense Goes Quiet After Two-Run Second
April 23, 2014

Midland, MI - It was disappointment at Dow Diamond for the Fort Wayne TinCaps Wednesday night, as they were defeated, 9-2, by the Great Lakes Loons in the third game of a four-game series. The TinCaps were limited to four hits, with only one of them coming after the third inning, in their third straight loss against the Loons.

Fort Wayne (7-11) scored its only two runs in the second inning on a two-run single from Luis Tejada. The hit helped Tejada, who entered the game with a .180 average, pick up his first RBI since April 11th. He plated Dane Phillips and Ryan Miller, giving the TinCaps a 2-0 lead.

TinCaps starter Yimmi Brasoban (0-2) was knocked around by the Great Lakes (13-6) offense in his 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned), with three walks and four strikeouts. The Loons responded to the TinCaps' two-run frame with a four-run bottom of the second inning, acquiring a lead they did not relinquish. Brasoban was knocked from the game in the third, which was a three-run inning for Great Lakes, and Payton Baskette took over on the mound in that frame. Baskette worked 3 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs.

A primary factor in the stifling of Fort Wayne's offense was Loons starter James Campbell (1-1). The 22-year-old surrendered only three hits in five innings, walking three and striking out one as he earned his first victory of the year. Victor Arano notched a save with four innings of one-hit baseball.

Great Lakes capped the scoring with two more runs in the fourth inning, which were the last runs scored in the game. The Loons were also three-for-four in stolen bases, bringing their three-game series total to 17-for-19.

A win for Fort Wayne Thursday, when first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., will help the TinCaps avoid being swept on the road in a four-game series for the first time since May 12-15, 2009, also at Great Lakes. The scheduled starters are Pete Kelich for Fort Wayne and Luis Chirinos for Great Lakes. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
