MIDLAND, Mich. - The TinCaps won a rain-shortened game, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) at Dow Diamond. Fort Wayne shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and first baseman Brad Zunica both homered and had RBI singles.
The game went into a rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a stoppage of 1 hour and 6 minutes, the game was called.
Zunica gave the TinCaps (28-15, 54-59) a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a leadoff solo blast to right-center field off Chris Mathewson (L). It was Zunica's 18th home run of the season.
After the Loons (20-23, 55-56) tied the game in the bottom of the second, Tatis provided a two-out RBI single in the third. That scored second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza who had doubled with two outs. Zunica followed Tatis with an RBI single, too, that made it 3-1.
Once again Great Lakes matched Fort Wayne with a pair in the home third. The difference in the game proved to be a towering Tatis homer to left field in the fifth. Tatis now has 19 home runs, which leads the team and ranks tied for second in the Midwest League.
Tatis is one home run away from matching the Fort Wayne franchise record of 20 home runs in a season (Jake Patterson, 1997). As a team, the TinCaps have 101 home runs on the year. That is also one shy of tying the franchise record of 102 home runs in a season -- set in 2014.
Ronald Bolaños (W) had some control issues, walking five, but allowed only two hits in 5 2/3 innings. (The game went into a delay with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. The Loons had the tying run at third base.)
