INDIANAPOLIS, IN.: The Mud Hens were held by the Indians pitching staff to two hits for the second time in their last three games and Indianapolis defeated Toledo, 7-0, in the series opener on Tuesday evening at Victory Field.

Despite taking the loss, Joey Wentz (0-2) turned in a solid outing for the Mud Hens just six days removed from making his Major League debut with the Tigers. He tossed five innings, surrendering three runs, seven hits, and a walk along with piling up five strikeouts.

Back-to-back hits from Mason Martin and Cal Mitchell accounted for the first Indians run in the bottom of the second.

Indianapolis scratched across two more in the home half of the third off Wentz. Ji-hwan Bae singled in Oneil Cruz for the first tally. After a Martin base hit, Mitchell delivered his second RBI single of the contest to push the Indy lead to 3-0.

Jacob Robson slammed his fifth double of the season to lead off the fifth inning, but the Mud Hens couldn’t advance him beyond second base.

Chase Anderson and Luis Castillo both worked around a hit to toss scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh.

Zack Short advanced his on-base streak to four consecutive games with his team-leading 12th double in the eighth inning.

Indianapolis blew the game open with a four-run eighth to provide the final margin. Bae and Martin climbed aboard ahead of Mitchell, who drove in his third run of the game on a groundout. Consecutive walks to Canaan Smith-Njigba and Travis Swaggerty loaded the bases. A passed ball forced in a run, and Carter Bins drove in the other two baserunners to cap the damage.

Five Indy pitchers combined to deal Toledo its second shutout loss of the season. Osvaldo Bido got the start and sidestepped a walk in the first. Cody Bolton (1-1) struck out six over four innings to earn the win. Cam Vieaux threw the sixth, Hunter Stratton went the next two, wiggling out of an eighth inning jam in the process, and Yerry De Los Santos finished the game.

Ryan Lavarnway drew a walk in the fourth to move his on-base streak to five.

NEXT UP: The series switches to day games for Wednesday and Thursday as the Mud Hens and Indians will continue their six-game set. Wednesday’s first pitch at Victory Field is slated for 1:35 p.m.
