DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tortugas scored five runs in the fourth inning of a 6-3 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads Saturday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in front of 2,098 spectators. Daytona has now won a season-best four straight games.
Jupiter got the scoring started in the second inning against RHP Wendolyn Bautista. With two outs, and a runner at first, Corey Bass doubled to right field to drive home his first run of the year. Hammerheads added on an inning later with an RBI double from Angel Reyes to center field and a bas hit to right from Brad Haynal.
Trailing, 3-0, Daytona got on the board in the third inning when Mitch Piatnik scored on a RHP Felipe Gonzalez wild pitch.
The Tortugas erupted an inning later, scoring five times in the fourth inning on five hits. The scoring began with an RBI double to left field off the bat of Garrett Boulware. The Tortugas tied it up a batter later on an RBI infield single from Piatnik. Blake Butler followed with an RBI single to left, as Daytona placed the first five men of the inning on base.
Leading for the first time, 4-3, Piatnik would score from second on a two-base sacrifice fly off the bat of Shed Long. Reydel Medina added the final tally of the frame with a single to left field, scoring Butler.
The Tortugas pitching staff would hold Jupiter hitless after the third inning. RHP Sarkis Ohanian came on in the ninth and proceeded to walk the bases full. He threw 12 of his 15 pitches out of the strike zone.
With the bases loaded, nobody out, and the tying run at first base, Daytona turned to RHP Tanner Rainey. He followed by striking out Bass and Zach Sullivan, before getting Kyle Barrett to bounce back to the mound, leaving the tying run on base.
RHP Austin Orewiler (1-1) earned the win for his 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Gonzalez (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Rainey registered his third save and second of the series.
Bautista did not factor in the decision, allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The series concludes on Sunday at 5:35 PM at The Jack. RHP Jonathan Crawford (0-1, 2.28) will face off against Jupiter's RHP Trevor Richards (3-2, 2.22). Pregame coverage will begin at 5:20 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
