DAYTONA BEACH, FL - A Gavin LaValley error proved costly as the Palm Beach Cardinals scored the winning run to take the series opener, 4-3, over the Tortugas in 12 innings on Thirsty Thursday at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in front of 2,384 fans.
RHP Sandy Lugo saw the first three men of the top of the twelfth inning reach against him. While new catcher Chadwick Tromp did thrown out an attempted base stealer, Darren Seferina chopped a ball to the right side of the infield with two men on. LaValley saw it go off his glove, careening into right field to bring in Thomas Spitz for what would be the winning tally.
The Cardinals were also the team that got on the board first. Randy Arozarena and Chris Chinea hit back-to-back doubles off of RHP Wendolyn Bautista to put Palm Beach in front, 1-0, with two outs in the first inning.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Nick Senzel gave the Tortugas their first lead of the night. With two men on, the Reds top prospect nailed a single to left field. Daniel Sweet was aggressive in coming to the plate, forcing a high Arozarena throw, to allow him and Shed Long to cross the plate and make it 2-1 Daytona.
After José Godoy's sacrifice-fly squared the score at two in the top half, Sweet's bounding RBI single back up the middle in the home half of the seventh plated Garrett Boulware to make it 3-2 Tortugas.
With two outs and two strikes on him in the ninth, Blake Drake's first blast of the season over the left-field fence off of RHP Zack Weiss forced the contest into extra frames, 3-3.
Bautista logged 6 1/3 stanzas on the hill, yielding five hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and a strikeout. Lugo (3-3) pitched the twelfth and was the tough luck recipient of the loss.
The Tortugas look to even the set against the Cardinals on Bark at the Park Night at the Jack. It's also Star Wars Night with special character appearances and the Tortugas sporting specialty jerseys. First pitch is at 7:05 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: Daytona lost just its second game of the season when leading after six innings (23-2)… The Tortugas fell to 5-4 in extra-inning games with the defeat… Five of the seven runs scored in the game came with two outs… Daniel Sweet has multiple hits in four straight games… Nick Senzel has at least one RBI in his last four assignments
