DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays scored the final five runs Saturday to take the series from the Daytona Tortugas with a 5-2 win at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Things started off well for the Tortugas. The first three men reached in the second inning setting the stage for Chris Okey. He swatted a single to left field, scoring Gavin LaValley and Daniel Sweet, to give Daytona the first lead of the game, 2-0. Okey also caught Cavan Biggio attempting to steal and picked off Andrew Guillotte in the bottom of the first, defensively.
The Blue Jays turned to small ball in the third to tie things up. Biggio, along with Max Pentecost, had consecutive sacrifice bunts off of Tortugas starter RHP José López to bring in Kevin Vicuña and Guillotte consecutively.
Lopez (1-3) had his longest outing of the year on Saturday, but unfortunately was saddled with his second straight loss. He threw 6 1/3 innings, yielded four hits, three earned runs, three walks, and eight strikeouts, a season-high.
A dropped third strike started a chain of events in the seventh that would lead to Daytona's demise. Sandy Lugo relieved Lopez immediately after D.J. Davis reached on the dropped third strike. From there, Lugo would walk three straight to force in the go-ahead run. Danny Jansen also banged a two-run single past Alfredo Rodriguez to add to the Dunedin lead, 5-2.
RHP Conor Fisk (2-3) followed in relief of RHP Chris Smith to earn the win for the Blue Jays. He fanned two and walked three while allowing two earned runs in a season-high 6 1/3 innings. RHP Tom Robson struck out two in the ninth to earn his first save of 2017.
The Tortugas are off on Sunday before beginning a four-game set at The Jack against the Bradenton Marauders on Monday evening.
