DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Nick Senzel drove home a season-best four runs in Daytona's, 6-3, victory over the Bradenton Marauders Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The win snapped Bradenton's seven game winning streak.
The Tortugas got out of the gate early, courtesy of Nick Senzel. The Reds top prospect nailed a two-run shot over the left field fence, his third of the year, in the bottom of the first off of RHP Mitch Keller to open the scoring, 2-0.
The long ball played a factor in the third, as Gavin LaValley slammed a solo shot to left field, his eighth of 2017, to make the score, 3-0.
After a Cole Tucker two-run double in the fifth cut the Daytona lead to one, Senzel and LaValley combined to drive in three critical insurance runs in the seventh. With two outs in the frame, Alfredo Rodriguez and Shed Long singled to put two men on. Senzel came through with a two-run double to the left-center field alleyway, scoring both men, making it 5-2. LaValley would then rip a single to the opposite field, plating Senzel to give Daytona a 6-2 edge.
RHP Jesús Reyes (4-1) had a nice comeback effort after his rough start last Wednesday. He hurled six innings, yielded three hits, two earned runs, three walks, and struck out a career-high nine. RHP Jake Paulson, who earned his second hold of the campaign, worked around a single in the seventh inning.
Paulson later got in a jam in the eighth. The first three men of the stanza reached, forcing Eli Marrero to bring in closer RHP Tanner Rainey with the bases loaded. After a four-pitch walk to Jordan George forced a run in, Rainey settled down by fanning two hitters and getting a pickoff to escape the threat. He would go on to pitch the ninth and seal the Tortugas victory.
RHP Mitch Keller (3-2) left after tossing just one inning due to back tightness. He surrended two hits, two earned runs, and a walk.
The Tortugas look for another triumph over Bradenton on a busy Wednesday evening. Wednesday night means Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the park with the Tortugas wearing specialty jerseys. There will also be $1 hot dogs, soda, and popcorn at the park. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show starting at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: The 2-4 hitters in the Daytona lineup (Long, Senzel, LaValley) went a combined 7-for-12 with two doubles, two homers, and 6 RBI… Shed Long had his sixth three-hit game of 2017… Alfredo Rodriguez extended his career-high hitting streak to nine contests… Garrett Boulware also continued to build upon a hit streak, increasing his to five straight games… Nick Senzel had his third four RBI assignment of his career and first with Daytona…LaValley's home run was the first in 16 games and 60 at-bats (4/28). He now has eight on the year, third most in the FSL
