DAYTONA BEACH, FL -The Daytona Tortugas won both legs of their doubleheader on Wednesday night, in two totally different ways. Game one was a slugfest, with Daytona winning 11-8, while game two was a pitchers duel, with the Tortugas winning 2-0.
Game One
Daytona cracked the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the second. Brantley Bell drove in Mitch Nay with a single for the day's first run, before Daniel Sweet and Bell both scored on wild pitches to make it 3-0.
In the top of the third, Robbie Tenerowicz drove in two with a single, before scoring on a Nate Lowe double to tie it. Charlotte would take the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. They moved ahead, 4-3, on a Lucius Fox fielders choice. Josh Lowe followed with a two-run triple to double the Stone Crabs lead. Tenerowicz rounded out the scoring with a single, extending the lead to 7-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Daytona's bats came back to life. After Deivy Mendez loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, he was pulled for Spencer Jones with the bases loaded. On the third pitch from Jones, he hit Mitch Nay to drive in a run, and cut the lead to 7-4. Sweet followed with a run-scoring single, and Bell cut the lead to one with a fielders choice ground out. Trailing 7-6, TJ Friedl hit a pinch-hit, two run double to left to give the Tortugas an 8-7 lead.
The Tortugas added insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run from Taylor Trammell, and a single from Bell to make it 11-7. The Stone Crabs added one in the top of the seventh, to round out the scoring 11-8, before RHP Nick Howard stranded the tying run at the plate.
RHP Ryan Hendrix (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win. He gave up just one hit, while striking out three.
RHP Spencer Jones (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in an inning of relief.
Howard picked up the Tortugas first save of the season; recoding the final six outs, while allowing a run. It was the fourth save of his career.
Game Two
By the time game two rolled around, all of the offense was already used up. After the first five innings were scoreless, the Tortugas got on the scoreboard with two in the bottom of the sixth for the games only runs. Friedl hit a one-out triple to center, and came in to score the game's first run on a two-out Luis Gonzalez infield single. Tyler Stephenson then drove in Trammell with a single, to make it 2-0.
RHP Tony Santillan (1-0) got the win, tossing six scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit and two walks, and striking out eight.
RHP Brandon Lawson (0-1) was handed the loss. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and the game's only runs.
RHP Jesse Stallings pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of 2018.
Daytona will go for the sweep Thursday against the Stone Crabs. LHP Scott Moss (1-0, 1.59 ERA) will get the ball for the Tortugas in the finale. For Charlotte, it will be LHP Kenny Rosenberg (0-0, 6.75 ERA).
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: Daytona's streak of six straight games with a batter hit by a pitch came to an end in game two… With hits in both games, Luis Gonzalez extended his hitting-streak to 16 straight, dating back to 2017… The Tortugas have now won five straight, non-nine inning games (2 rain shortened, 7-inning DH, 1 extras)… 6-1 is the Tortugas best start since 2011
