ASHEVILLE-- The Asheville Tourists fell behind 7-1 to the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night. Asheville scored four in the seventh, loaded the bases in the eighth, and managed one in the ninth. They ultimately fell short 7-6.
Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Asheville Tourists were down to their final three outs. A rally plated a run and put the tying run at second with two outs. Brian Serven lined what appeared to be a game-tying single into centerfield.
Augusta's Johneshwy Fargas fielded the ball and came up throwing. Bobby Wernes, representing the tying run, raced around third base. Fargas' throw hit the catcher Skyler Ewing in the mitt after one hop and Wernes' slide attempt was altered by the sturdy backstop. Ewing put the tag on Wernes to end the game and end Asheville's hopes at another comeback win.
Breiling Eusebio was roughed up for seven runs in six innings. Eusebio's home ERA now sits north of ten. Caleb Baragar pitched outstanding for Augusta. The former Indiana Hoosier racked up six innings of his own work and limited Asheville to just one run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Max George hit an RBI double to score Serven. Willie Abreu followed with a two-run double plating Ryan Metzler and George. Bobby Wernes later singled in Abreu.
The ninth inning rally had the fans on their feet. Nevin and Wernes hit back-to-back singles and Vince Fernandez followed with a walk. The bases were loaded with no outs. After Manny Melendez popped out, Taylor Snyder hit a sacrifice fly to score Nevin. Serven then worked a deep count before singling into center. Fortunately for Augusta, Fargas saved the day.
Both teams are back at it on Friday night with the first pitch at McCormick Field scheduled for 7:05pm.
