Travs & Cards split Wednesday doubleheader

North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers and Springfield Cardinals split a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park, with Arkansas taking game one 4-2 and Springfield winning game two 2-1.

Game One

RHP Alex Klonowski (W, 1-2) earned his first Double-A win with 5.1 innings of work without allowing a run. Klonowski surrendered three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Arkansas scored three runs in the third inning. C Jose Briceno worked a one-out walk and scored on an RF Anthony Phillips triple down the right field line. 2B Sean Coyle then doubled to left to plate Phillips, and scored on a 1B Alex Yarbrough sacrifice fly.

Leading 3-0, the Travs added an insurance run in the sixth which proved to be significant.

Springfield scored twice in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-2, but with runners on first and third with one out (tying run at first), CF Harrison Bader struck out and SS Alex Mejia grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Travs SS David Fletcher finished 2-for-3 in the win.

Game Two

After playing 118 consecutive clean innings, Arkansas committed errors on back-to-back plays in the third that allowed Springfield to score both of its runs.

Arkansas plated a run in the bottom of the third on an 3B Andrew Daniel groundout, but that's all the Travs would get.

RHP Zach Nuding (L, 2-3) took the tough-luck loss after allowing the two unearned runs over five innings.

RHP Victor Alcantara and RHP Austin Adams worked scoreless innings in relief after Nuding.

SS Paul DeJong finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI in the win for the Cardinals.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Travs and Naturals are tied atop the Texas League North second half standings. Arkansas and Springfield will play game four of the five-game set on Thursday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
