READING, PA --- Outfielder Matt Lipka recorded the fourth cycle in the team's franchise history, however, the Thunder dropped the opener of their four-game series with the Reading Fightin Phils, 5-3, on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Lipka doubled in his first at-bat off JoJo Romero, tripled off the starting left-hander in the sixth and singled in the seventh off Jakob Hernandez before stepping to the plate in the ninth inning. Trailing 5-1, Jorge Saez doubled off Jeff Singer and Lipka followed with a two-run homer to left to make it 5-3.
Lipka, who went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two drive in, recorded the fourth cycle in Trenton's franchise history and the first since Thairo Estrada on September 7, 2017 in Game Two of the Eastern Division Championship Series.
Reading held a 1-0 lead through five innings when Lipka tripled off the wall to begin the sixth inning and scored on a single by Hoy Jun Park. The Fightin Phils quickly re-took the lead with back-to-back home runs by Alec Bohm and Darick Hall off James Reeves in the bottom half of the inning. The Fightins added two more in the seventh when Moniak and Bohm each drove in runs.
Brady Lail made a spot start for the Thunder allowing one run over three innings of relief. He had a 12.0 inning scoreless streak come to an end when Cornelius Randolph scored on an error in the second inning.
