July 7, 2022

Gabe Matthews struck a two-run, two-out opposite field single in the top of the 9th inning to give the Tri-City Dust Devils (4-7 2H, 33-41) a 5-4 win over the Spokane Indians (4-6 2H, 38-36) Wednesday night at Avista Stadium. Matthews’ clutch hit, off Spokane reliever Anderson Bido (0-4), scored

Matthews’ clutch hit, off Spokane reliever Anderson Bido (0-4), scored both Mike Peabody and D’Shawn Knowles. The single both took the lead back for Tri-City and gave them enough cushion to absorb a Spokane solo home run in the bottom of the 9th.

Earlier in the game Matthews hit a ringing double off the center field fence, extending his on-base streak to 30 games. He was also one of four Tri-City hitters with multi-hit games, with Peabody, Kyren Paris and Edwin Yon joining Matthews with two hits on the night.

Peabody’s first hit, a line drive home run into the parking lot past right field, got the Dust Devils on the board in the 5th inning. Peabody’s sixth home run of 2022 cut the Indians lead to 2-1 at the time.

An inning later, Steven Rivas sent an opposite field two-run home run over the left field fence, his second homer in as many nights. The outfielder’s fifth longball of the season scored Mitch Nay, giving the Dust Devils a 3-2 lead in the 6th.

Despite a no-decision starter Landon Marceaux was great again for Tri-City, going seven innings and giving up only two runs (both unearned) on four hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Hayden Seig (3-0), who followed Marceaux in the 8th, got the win in relief. Glenn Albanese finished the 9th for his third save of the year, clinching the Dust Devils’ first win over Spokane in 2022.

Tri-City’s win evened the series at a game apiece, with game three against Spokane coming at 6:35 p.m. Thursday night at Avista Stadium. Robinson Piña goes to the hill for the Dust Devils, and lefty Evan Shawver gets the nod for the Indians.
