Tri-City Ties It In 9th, But Vancouver Walks Off With Win

May 21, 2022

Kenyon Yovan tripled in Christian Sepulveda to tie the game in the Tri-City Dust Devils’ (18-17) last at-bat, but Vancouver Canadians (16-17) catcher Zach Britton hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Canadians a 3-2 win over Tri-City Saturday afternoon at Nat Bailey

Kenyon Yovan tripled in Christian Sepulveda to tie the game in the Tri-City Dust Devils’ (18-17) last at-bat, but Vancouver Canadians (16-17) catcher Zach Britton hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Canadians a 3-2 win over Tri-City Saturday afternoon at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Britton’s homer, which sent an Emilker Guzman (1-2) pitch over the center field fence, was his second of the game. He scored all three runs for Vancouver in the contest, going 3 for 3 and reaching base four times. The longball also was the first earned run, let alone home run, given up by Guzman in 2022. As well, it gave the win to Canadians reliever Will McAffer (2-1), who blew the save in the top of the 9th.

The walkoff would not have happened if not for the Dust Devils’ 9th inning rally, begun by a Gabe Matthews single. Sepulveda pinch-ran for Matthews, scoring from first on Yovan’s triple down the right field line. Yovan went 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Tri-City’s other run came in the 1st inning. Matthews stung an RBI double to center scoring Jordyn Adams, who led the game off with a single, for a 1-0 lead. Matthews also went 2 for 4 in the game. Francisco Del Valle added a 2nd inning double.

The Dust Devils stayed in the game with their usual combination of solid pitching and defense. Glenn Albanese and Kyle Molnar each threw two scoreless innings in relief. Molnar retired all six batters he faced, three by strikeout. Starter Dylan King gave up two runs over four innings, striking out six.

The six-game series between Tri-City and Vancouver concludes with the finale at 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Nat Bailey Stadium. Righty Ryan Costeiu will make his second start of the series for the Dust Devils, with righty Alejandro Melean going for the Canadians.
