The Tulsa Drillers made it two wins in a row Saturday night, recording a 3-0 victory in San Antonio. The Drillers got home runs from Jacob Scavuzzo and Gavin Lux, and four outstanding relief innings from Yadier Álvarez to record the victory.
The result kept the first-place Drillers three games in front of second-place Arkansas and six games in front of third-place Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League's second-half North Division playoff race.
The win also improved Tulsa's record on its six-game road trip to 2-3 with the finale slated for Sunday in San Antonio.
The Drillers staked Tony Gonsolin to an early lead on Saturday with a run in the top of the second, but it could have been more. D.J. Peters drew a leadoff walk, and the Drillers followed with three straight singles to produce the game's first run, with Wes Darvill providing the run-scoring hit. With the bases loaded and no outs, Gonsolin struck out and Lux hit into an inning-ending double play.
Scavuzzo doubled Tulsa's lead to 2-0 in the third inning when he delivered his 19th home run of the season.
It remained that way until Lux struck in the top of the seventh. The shortstop delivered his second home run since joining the Drillers to increase the lead to three runs.
Alvarez made sure the three-run lead held. The right-hander turned in his best performance of the season, holding the Missions scoreless over the final four innings while allowing only two hits. Alvarez walked just one batter and struck out six to pick up his first save of the season and just his second as a pro.
WHAT YOU MISSED
Gonsolin was not involved in the decision as he worked only the first four innings, matching his shortest of the season. He did not allow run while surrendering two hits and issuing only two walks.
Andrew Istler worked a scoreless fifth inning to get credit for the victory to improve his record to 3-4.
Catcher Keibert Ruiz finished with three hits in the game.
Gonsolin, Istler and Alvarez combined to strike out 11 San Antonio batters in the game.
*Pitcher Michael Johnson was assigned to Oklahoma City on Friday, and the Drillers added reliever Andre Scrubb from Rancho Cucamonga. Scrubb was 4-0 with 3 saves and a 0.38 ERA while with the Quakes.
