CONEY ISLAND, NY - Juan Robles and Kit Scheetz threw a combined eight innings of no-hit ball against the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday night at MCU Park, but Walter Rasquin led off the ninth with a triple to end the bid. The ValleyCats gave up one more hit and a run in the inning, but ended up defeating the Cyclones by a final score of 3-1.
Robles (W, 1-1) worked the first five innings, striking out two and walking four. Scheetz (S, 2) came on the sixth and threw four innings, allowing the one earned run on two hits, while striking out three and walking two.
The ValleyCats have thrown two no-hitters in franchise history, with the last coming on August 6, 2015 when three pitchers, Kevin McCanna, Ralph Garza and Zac Person combined to no-hit the Aberdeen IronBirds. Prior to that, the 'Cats first franchise no-hitter occured on June 21, 2008 against the Oneonta Tigers, also with three pitchers.
Offensively, Colton Shaver singled home the first ValleyCats run in the fourth, and the 'Cats added another run on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 2-0. They added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by Bryan De La Cruz.
The rubber match of the series will take place on Friday night at MCU Park, as Corbin Martin (0-0, 0.00) takes the mound for the 'Cats opposite New York Mets 2017 first round draft pick David Peterson, who is making his professional debut.
