ValleyCats fall in series opener to Lowell

LOWELL, MA - The Tri-City ValleyCats suffered a series opening loss to the Lowell Spinners by a final score of 4-0. Dakota Smith (3-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Jake Thompson, while Kit Scheetz (0-3) took the loss.

Lowell got on the board first in the fourth inning, with an RBI double by Marino Campana to make it 1-0. Yoan Aybar immediately followed that up with an RBI single of his own to take a 2-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the fifth inning, with the Spinners picking up a run on a throwing error by Jonathan Arauz, before picking up an RBI single by Marino Campana to make it 4-0.

From that point on, Lowell's pitching staff held on to the shutout, allowing five hits the entire game, with three coming from Gabriel Bracamonte. Dakota Smith went six innings of relief after Jake Thompson pitched just one inning in his second professional start. Smith and Dominic LoBrutto combined to strike out five batters over eight innings.

Kit Scheetz had a solid start, but struggled in the fourth inning before ultimately being replaced by Luis Ramirez. Juan Robles provided three innings of scoreless relief to keep the ValleyCats in the game.

The 'Cats will play game two against the Spinners at 6:35 pm on Wednesday. The 'Cats will wrap up their series against the Spinners on Thursday before traveling to Williamsport for a three-game series against the Crosscutters.
