(Memorial Stadium - Everett, WA) - A grand slam off the bat of Canadians 3B Jesus Severino in the top of the 2nd inning helped push Vancouver back into the win column with an 8-4 victory over Everett on Thursday night.
Vancouver sent 11 hitters to the plate in the top of the 2nd inning as Everett RHP Ivan Fortunato watched his defense crumble around him early on. The trouble started after a lazy groundout to start the inning produced a quick out - Aquasox 3B Nick Rodriguez and 2B Ryne Ogren fumbled routine ground balls to hand the Canadians a pair of base runners before 2B Sterling Guzman singled to bring 3B Jesus Severino to the plate. The very first pitch Severino saw from Fortunato was crushed over the left field fence giving Vancouver an early 4-0 lead. prior to the grand slam, Severino hadn't produced either a home run or an RBI in his previous four games. Before the dust had settled, Canadians C Yorman Rodriguez hit an RBI double followed by a two-run double from RF Griffin Conine to give Vancouver a 7-0 lead.
Everett would respond with a three-run bottom of the 2nd inning that included a two-run double from C Troy Dixon.
The Aquasox would plate a run in the bottom of the 6th inning when 2B Ryne Ogren singled home DH Matt Sanders (walk) off RHP Juan Nunez. Vancouver would respond with the game's final run in the top of the 7th when RF Tanner Kirwer doubled to leadoff, advanced to third base on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly from CF Hunter Steinmetz. The final, 8-4 Canadians.
Canadians starter LHP Jordan Barrett improves to 2-0 after going 5 2/3 innings allowing five hits, four earned runs and striking out seven.
Vancouver will wrap-up this three-game series on Firiday, July 6th at 7:05pm with RHP Josh Winckowski (1-2, 4.50) getting the start coming off of a six-inning quality start against Salem-Keizer (6/30).
