(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - Despite a late rally from Spokane in the top of the 9th inning, Vancouver had already built enough of a lead that it held for a 5-4 win over the Indians on Sunday afternoon out at sun-drenched Scotiabank Field. The victory was the Canadians fourth straight getting them back to .500 on the season, but more importantly gave them a chance to catch both the Everett Aquasox and Tri-City Dust Devils in the North Division by night's end.
Vancouver opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning plating three runs off Indians starter RHP Scott Engler (2-1) as DH Yorman Rodriguez and 3B Sterling Guzman both hit RBI singles while 1B Jake Brodt grounded out with RF Griffin Conine at third base to help the Canadians build a 3-0 lead.
SS Vinny Capra (2nd inning) and C Brett Wright (3rd inning) had RBI singles that extended Vancouver's lead to 5-0 before the Indians began to mount a comeback with a two run top of the 6th and two more in the top of the 9th. Canadians RHP Connor Law struck out PH Curtis Terry to end the game securing Vancouver's 12th victory of the season.
Notes: Each of Vancouver's nine starters had at least one base hit on Sunday with SS Vinny Capra going 2-3 to bump his season average to .254... RHP Joey Murray struck out four over his two innings of work while RHP Sean Wymer (1-1) picked up his first professional win going three innings of one-hit baseball striking out two... Vancouver has now won it's past four consecutive series dating back to June 28 when they topped Tri-City by a run to take two games of a three-game series.
With the win, Vancouver is now 12-12 (.500) on the season while Spokane falls to 8-16 (.333). The Canadians will look for the series sweep on Monday, July 9th at 7:05pm sending RHP Randy Pondler (0-3, 4.24) to the mound in search of the 13th victory of the season for Vancouver. The game on Monday has been announced as a sellout, the Canadians 7th of the season.
