(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - The Hillsboro Hops (23-12) punched a ticket to the post-season thanks to a lopsided 10-1 victory over Vancouver on Friday afternoon. The Canadians would allow eight hits, walk eight more and commit three errors to fall a game below .500 (17-18) with a 10-1 loss at the hands of the South Division First-Half pennant winners.
Canadians RHP Juan Nunez was solid over his four innings of work allowing a simple solo home run to North York, Ontario's Andy Yerzy in the no-decision outing. Nunez handed the ball to RHP Denis Diaz for the top of the 5th with the game knotted at 1-1, but Diaz couldn't find the strike zone walking three and when he did find the strike zone he would get allow a pair of hits as the Honduran allowd five earned runs over just 1/3 of a inning to take his first loss of the season.
North Vancouver's RHP Will McAffer struggled as well during the matinee allowing three runs (two earned) over his 1 1/3 innings. The Canadians bullpen simply didn't get it done as now Vancouver falls 1 1/2 games back of North Division leading Everett who faces Boise tonight at 6:15pm down in Idaho. The Aquasox magic number to win the North is now two games, meaning any combination of Everett victory or Canadians losses adding up to two gives Everett a spot in the Northwest League Playoffs.
Offensively, Canadians 3B Bryan Lizardo went 3-for-4 in the losing cause.
Vancouver faces Hillsboro for game three of this current five-game homestand on Saturday, July 21st at 7:05pm with RHP Jose Espada (1-3, 4.76) going opposite RHP Ryan Weiss (0-0, 5.40) with both team's having a win under their belt so far. Vancouver won the series opener on Thursday, 5-0.
The Canadians announced that there are no tickets available to either Saturday (July 21) or Sunday (July 22) games but do have tickets to the series finale set for Monday, July 23rd at 7:05pm which could prove to be a ket game for the Canadians who are still in the chase for the North Division pennant.
