(Volcanoes Stadium - Keizer, OR) - The very first pitch that Canadians reliever RHP Will McAffer offered up was smashed over the left field fence for a three-run home run to tie Friday's game at 6-6. Volcanoes LF Diego Rincones stood in the batter's box as it sailed towards the left field fence and then threw his bat a good 10-feet in the air landing several steps away before doing the obligatory trot around the bases. It was enough that the Canadians rallied around McAffer scoring four times in the top of the 10th inning to take back a win from Salem-Keizer that keeps them atop the North Division.
Vancouver's offense pounded out 15-hits on the night getting a 4-for-5 night from 1B Sterling Guzman, 3-for-5 night's from both C Yorman Rodriguez and SS Jesus Severino and a triple from RF Tanner Kirwer that helped the Canadians to their 9th victory of the second half.
RHP Juan Nunez didn't factor in the victory decision wise but his 5 2/3 innings of six hit baseball limited Salem-Keizer's potent offense to just three runs as Vancouver built a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 9th inning. RHP Connor Law walked DH Robinson Medrano and allowed a single to SS Nico Giatarrano before collecting his second out that put Vancouver within a batter of a victory, but Canadians manager Dallas McPherson opted to go to his bullpen and pull out RHP Will McAffer who offered up the pitch that LF Diego Rincones hit for his 7th home run of the season, and 2nd of the game.
It was the bat flip that did the Volcanoes in.
Vancouver got the next hitter, C Joey Bart to ground out and went back into the dugout ready to exhume the demons that have followed the Canadians late-inning efforts as of late and powered back with three straight doubles from C Yorman Rodriguez, SS Jesus Severino and 1B Sterling Guzman that ended up propelling Vancouver to a four-run outburst which was enough to secure a 10-7 victory.
McAffer ended up with the win to improve to (4-2, 5.49) while the loss fell at the feet of Salem-Keizer RHP Matt Frisbee who allowed the quartet of runs in the top of the 10th inning.
Vancouver improves to 28-25 (.528) and 9-6 (.600) on the second half, a game better than both Everett and Spokane who both won Friday night.
The Canadians send RHP Jose Espada (2-4, 3.97) gets the ball in hopes of securing Vancouver's fifth victory in the past six games. Vancouver is currently 4-3 (.571) on it's 13-day, 10-game road trip that runs through Monday, August 13th at 6:35pm.
Vancouver Canadians Baseball returns to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Tuesday, August 14th at 7:05pm to open a six-game homestand vs. Tri-City (Aug 14-16) and Spokane (Aug 17-19) with ticket currently available at www.canadiansbaseball.com, by calling 604.872.5232 or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
