HILLSBORO, OR – The Vancouver Canadians once again failed to figure out the Eugene Emeralds (Giants) Saturday night as a second inning error scored the tying run and allowed the Emeralds to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in a 7-4 loss at Ron Tonkin Field.

Leading 1-0 after a run-scoring Tanner Morris double in the first, Vancouver saw their lead disappear in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, starter Adam Kloffenstein (L, 1-3) induced a ground ball to second base that should have ended the frame but instead was booted to allow the tying run to score and kept the bags full. The next batter worked a bases loaded walk to give the Ems a one-run advantage.

Eugene scored three times in the fifth to go up 5-1 before the C’s clawed back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Ronny Brito and DJ Neal worked consecutive walks to start the stanza before Tanner Kirwer singled to load the bases. After a strikeout, Cameron Eden was plunked to force home a run before Spencer Horwitz lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that made it 5-3.

The Emeralds plated single runs in the sixth and seventh to maintain their lead despite a Phil Clarke RBI single in the sixth that scored Luis De Los Santos from second after he started the inning with a double. The Canadians had runners at the corners and no outs in the eighth but failed to score then went in order in the ninth to lose 7-4.

Parker Caracci turned in two scoreless innings of relief as the only pitcher to not allow a run. De Los Santos paced the offense with two hits and a run scored while Tanner Morris reached three times with a couple of hits and a walk.

With the loss, Vancouver has dropped its first series of the season.

The Canadians and Emeralds wrap up the six-game set tomorrow afternoon. Right-hander Paxton Schultz gets the ball for Vancouver while Aaron Phillips will go for Eugene. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. Individual tickets, 12-game plans and season tickets are available now at CanadiansBaseball.com.
