The Salem Keizer Volcanoes are excited to announce that former Volcanoes' infield instructor Hector Borg has been named the skipper of the Volcanoes for the 2018 season. Hector spent last season as the Manager of the Arizona League Giants guiding the club to the AZL Championship Series.
Joining Borg on the Salem Keizer staff will be a couple of new faces to the Volcanoes. The pitching coach will be Dwight Bernard who served as the pitching coach for the AAA Sacramento River Cats from 2014 - 2017.
The hitting coach will be Jake Fox, a former utility player with 4 years of Major League experience with the Cubs, Orioles, and Athletics.
The Volcanoes' fundamentals coach will be Mark Hallberg; who has served as a coach in the Cape Cod League for 4 years.
The Volcanoes will also have a new training staff for 2018. Charlene Wichman is the new Athletic Trainer, and Joe Palazzolo is the new Strength and Conditioning coach. Wichman was the trainer for the AZL Giants in 2017 and Palazzolo will be starting his first year in the Giants organization.
Last season's Volcanoes Manager, Jolbert Cabrera, will be the Manager of the single "A" Augusta Green Jackets in 2018 and Matt Yourkin will be the Pitching Coach for the San Jose Giants.
"We look forward to a successful season in Salem-Keizer with an experienced, knowledgeable staff," said Vice President of Player Development David Bell. "Salem-Keizer is often the first stop for future Giants players and we are excited for the 2018 season."
As the organization heads into the 2018 season, 19 former Volcanoes' coaches and trainers are with the Giants in various positions. Also within the Giants' Player Development staff is a native of the Salem-Keizer area. Dave Brundage will be the Manager for AAA Sacramento, returning to the same position he had in 2017. Brundage played high school ball at McKay High School in Salem, and college ball at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
