The Volcanoes ran away with their sixth straight win, blasting the Hops 10-4 in front of 4,126 at Hillsboro Ballpark.
Tyler Hollick led off the game with a double to left and later scored on a Brandon Bednar groundout to make it 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first. The Hops quickly responded when Zach Esquerra singled in Taylor Ratliff to tie the game. Esquerra was 2-for-4 on the night with three RBIs two of which came on a homerun over the centerfield fence.
The Volcanoes opened up a 5-1 lead in the third when Jose Martinez quickly loaded the bases to start the inning. Ryan Honeycutt then hit a two-RBI single to right and later scored when Randy Ortiz had his own two-run single. Honeycutt was 3-for-5 on the night with four RBIs.
Volcanoes reliever Lorenzo Mendoza (2-0) earned the win by pitching the fifth through the eight innings, surrendering only one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
The teams combined for 24 hits, 14 belonging to the Volcanoes, but six walks issued by the Hops pitching staff turned out to be a deciding factor. The Volcanoes walked only one batter.
Seven of the nine batters in the Volcanoes lineup scored a run and all nine reached base safely during the game.
Ryan Jones, who started just his second game since returning from a foot injury, went 4-for-4 and reached safely in all five of his at-bats. He is 7-for-8 in his past two games.
The Volcanoes added their tenth and final run in the eighth when Bednar scored on a Honeycutt double to bring the score to 10-4.
The 10 runs the Volcanoes scored was a season high, extending their winning streak to six games, one better than when the Volcanoes began the 2013 campaign winning five out of the box. It also moves Salem-Keizer to 6-1 on the road and 9-1 in the Northwest League South Division. The Volcanoes also recorded a season best with four steals and seven of nine Volcanoes in the line up scored at least one run.
The Volcanoes and Hops will face off again Saturday at Hillsboro Ballpark. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
