FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps welcomed manager Lance Parrish back to the dugout, but the offense couldn't get the bats going as part of a 3-2 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Monday at Parkview Field.
Parrish, who was away from the club this weekend due to the Detroit Tigers number retirement of former teammate and newly inducted Hall of Famer Jack Morris, returned to the club Monday.
Owen Miller helped the TinCaps open the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Fort Wayne extended their lead in the third when Jack Suwinski launched his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to bring the score to 3-0. The 'Caps plated single runs in the sixth and seventh but stranded four base runners in the final two innings. Catcher Chris Proctor nearly gave the 'Caps the lead with a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth before it a diving stop by Fort Wayne first baseman Nick Feight secured the baseball and the victory for the TinCaps.
Fort Wayne starter Jose Quezada (1-1) allowed two unearned runs in three innings to earn his first victory, while Whitecaps starter Chance Kirby (0-1) took the loss in his Midwest League debut after giving up three runs in five innings. Evan Miller entered the game in the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the 2018 season. The Whitecaps second-half record declines to 24-25 and 60-59 overall, keeping the first potential playoff spot in the second-half Eastern Division standings, but watching their lead fall to just one game. Fort Wayne improves to 55-63 on the season and 23-26 in the second half. Kody Clemens and Jordan Pearce each had two hits in a losing cause for West Michigan. On their seven-game road trip, the Whitecaps are batting 3-for-49 (.061) with runners in scoring position after a 0-for-7 performance on Monday.
