SOUTH BEND, IN - For the second straight night, the West Michigan Whitecaps offense remained quiet as part of a 4-2 loss to the South Bend Cubs on Friday night at Four Winds Field.
The Whitecaps took the lead to begin the night when Garrett McCain slapped an RBI-single to score Alexis Garcia and give West Michigan a 1-0 lead. McCain is hitting .309 in May after struggling to the tune of a .170 batting average in April. The Cubs wasted no time getting back in the contest, getting a run-scoring single by Jared Young before first baseman Rey Rivera dropped the baseball on a potential inning-ending double play to allow South Bend to score the go-ahead run and take a 2-1 advantage. Zach Davis plated another run with a single in the fourth. The score remained the same until the eighth when Rey Rivera blasted a run-scoring double to bring the deficit to 3-2, but the 'Caps stranded runners at first and third when Dylan Rosa grounded out to shortstop to end the frame.
'Caps starter Brad Bass (3-3) earned a quality start but took a tough-luck loss allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings while issuing a season-low one walk and striking out five. Cory Abbott (3-1) gave up just one run in six innings of his own to earn his third will of the year. Brian Glowicki pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to finish the contest and earn his sixth save of the year. The loss drops the Whitecaps to 26-21, while the Cubs improve to 20-26. Cole Peterson singled in the third extended his team-best hitting streak to 13 games and led the 'Caps along with Rivera to provide two-hit efforts in the defeat. The 'Caps have scored just two runs in their last two games.
